George A. Virnovsky, Head of Research in Reservoir Modelling at the International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS) has resently passed away.
Dr. Virnovsky was born in Moscow and earned a PhD degree in Reservoir Engineering from All-Union Scientific-Research Oil-Gas Institute, Moscow, Russia in 1980. After his graduation, he continue working at this institute from 1971 until early 1992. He then moved to Stavanger, Norway with his family and joined the University of Stavanger as a visiting scientist before accepting the position of a chief scientist in Reservoir Modelling at IRIS in 1992, where he continued working until the time of his death. Dr. Virnovsky had recently accepted an offer as professor in theoretical reservoir physics at the University of Bergen and had planned to join the university in the Fall of 2008.
At IRIS, Dr. Virnovsky was involved in R&D on reservoir simulation, mathematical modelling, multiphase upscaling, planning and interpretation of special core analysis experiments, and pore scale modelling. He was a very skilled scientist who was highly regarded by all of his colleagues, and maintained close R&D collaborations with several research scientists in Norway, USA, Russia and Canada.
Dr. Virnovsky was a member of SPE and SCA, and published many papers in his main research areas. Dr. Virnovsky had a leading role in the development of a high quality R&D work at IRIS in the area of reservoir modelling.
