С 60-х он стал заниматься биологией и медициной - контактными линзами
Irving Fatt(1920-1996)Although Irving Fatt is best known in the UK for hiswork on contact lenses and physiological optics, hehad distinguished careers in the USA in chemistryand in petroleum, mechanical and bio-engineering.His seminal work in the 1970s on developingmethods to measure oxygen tension produced theuniversally recognised unit for oxygen permeabilitywhich bears his name. This was a naturalprogression from earlier studies of oxygen transportin blood and diffusion coefficients in haemoglobin. His concepts gave the contact lens industry therationale to develop successful modern gas-permeable and soft lens materials. He lived in London in the 1970s and 1980s andmuch of his research work was carried out withJennifer Chaston at St Thomas’ and Judith Morris atMoorfields hospitals. The original polarographic cell, which was used for ground-breaking studies onoxygen tension, is now in the Contact Lens Collectionof the College Museum. Whilst in the UK he was aneditorial consultant to The Optician and lecturedextensively, becoming a familiar figure at mostcontact lens meetings.Fatt produced over 200 publications and severalpatents. Amongst his numerous honours were theCharles F. Prentice Award, the Founders Award fromthe American Academy of Optometry, the HerschelMedal of the ISCLS in 1995, the Ruben Medal of theInternational Society for Contact Lens Research, aGold Medal from the Association of Contact LensManufacturers and the BCLA Medal from the BritishContact Lens Association in 1994. The first Irving FattMemorial lecture of the BCLA was given in 1997 byDr Philip Morgan.Oxygen tension under an oxygen-permeablecontact lens, with St Helen, R., Am. J.
